An earlier version of this essay said that there was no police report or hospital or doctor visit after Nathan Ballard-Means was struck by a motorist while in a crosswalk with his mother. Doctors were consulted and D.C. Police were contacted about the incident and were provided contact details for the driver that struck Nathan and for a witness. This version has been updated.

To underscore her administration’s concern for road safety around children, D.C. Mayor Muriel E.
