Why this petition matters

Started by caroline partamian

An application has been filed with San Bernardino County to establish a  Glamping "destination resort" (referred to as Flamingo 640) consisting of up to 75 glamping tent sites and chalet with support facilities including a restaurant, bar, reception area/store, recreational paths, art barn, yoga deck, fire pits, and a helipad spanning 640 acres—none of which will be open to the public—on the east side of the 247/Old Woman Springs between La Brisa Ave and Luna Springs Rd. The project proposal is seeking a Conditional Use Permit to establish such in a Rural Zoned area along Pipes Canyon Wash and bordering Sand to Snow National Monument.

This project will ENDANGER WILDLIFE, including desert tortoises and burrowing owls that have been spotted in the area, threaten Joshua Trees (this project plans to remove at least 34 trees), Mojave Yuccas, and more. According to the SB County's Department of Public Works - http://cms.sbcounty.gov/dpw/Land/especies/DesertTortoise.aspx (whose link is now broken) "it is unlawful to touch, harm, harass or collect a wild desert tortoise." This development would further EXACERBATE our water sources, add light, air and noise pollution in a currently serene desert expanse above a wash, which carries sound for miles. This development will pose a significant TRAFFIC HAZARD; the two-lane Highway 247 cannot support increased constant traffic. This development would further the CROWDING of Joshua Tree National Park (with already long wait times up to an hour to enter). This development does nothing to help our local communities and residents as it will stress our LIMITED RESOURCES on housing and access to water and food. This development will STRAIN THE LAND with a near 60,000 square foot sewage disposal area. Furthermore, the area is zoned for 'rural living,' not commercial, which the applicants have circumvented with a Conditional Use Permit (CUP). This project could AFFECT OTHER RURAL LIVING COMMUNITIES if the developer gets through this loophole.

We sign this petition primarily with environmental and safety initiatives in mind, as well as the preservation of the serenity and quality of life, and the strengthening of our small but beautiful community (as opposed to extraordinary amounts of money being spent on a development primarily meant for tourists).

We demand a full Environmental Impact Report under CEQA, which would include traffic studies, wildlife impact analysis, air/water quality, noise, and dark sky impacts among other important issues
