When our coffee tables became our desks and our living rooms became our conference rooms, the line between work and personal lives was all but destroyed.

This pandemic phenomenon of blending professional and personal worlds is why the job-review platform Glassdoor released a list of the companies with the best work-life balance, said Daniel Zhao, senior economist at Glassdoor. This list gives both job seekers and employers valuable insight into what companies and policies are satisfying workers.

Glassdoor analyzed work-life balance ratings given to companies between March 15, 2020, and September 28, 2021. It pulled data only from companies with 75 or more work-life balance ratings by full-time US-based employees.

The individual companies that topped the list cover a wide variety of sectors. For example, tech, real estate, and finance were among the highest-ranked industries, while retail, food services, and manufacturing ranked lower.

"There's actually quite a variety and diversity there," Zhao said. "And when we actually look at what employees are saying about how their employers value work-life balance, it shows a variety of approaches as well."

Glassdoor's study also found an increase in employee reviews that mentioned mental health and burnout from February 2020 to September 2021. This is why rankings like Glassdoor's are important for job seekers looking to find a company that will support them, Zhao said.

But this ranking is also useful for company leadership.

"This data is really valuable because it allows employers to understand how they benchmark against competitors," Zhao said. "And so if an employer notes that they have a gap in work-life balance, then that signals to them that they should go ask for employee feedback to actually understand what's driving those differences."
