London-based singer-songwriter Jenny Bulcraig (aka ROOKES) is releasing her debut single this weekend.

Titled "The Heel of My Hand," the gripping track officially arrives on Friday via all-female record label Seahorse Music, but ROOKES is giving Variance an early premiere on Thursday.

The confessional song follows seven years of hard work and having shared live billing with the likes of She Makes War and KT Tunstall. But as infectious as it is, its inspiration stems from heartbreak.

"I wrote it when I was tail-spinning quite badly after losing the first woman I ever fell in love with," the singer explains. "I kept dreaming about her which made things feel worse, so this song was my first concerted effort to write her out of my system. At the same time I was coming to terms with my sexuality and the deep-seated frustration I had wrestled with for years in relation to it; so much of that frustration was funneled into the song. There is a direct reference in the title lyric to particular experience, but you'll have to wait for the music video to find out what that is."

While we wait for that video, hear "The Heel of My Hand" below.
