Nickelodeon is upping its commitment to news, as the kid-focused cable network has hired a veteran of 60 Minutes to lead its programming in that space.
Magalie Laguerre-Wilkinson, an Emmy and Peabody award-winning producer for 60 Minutes, is joining Nick in the newly created position of vp news programming and will also serve as the executive producer of the recently revived Nick News franchise. She’ll report to Brian Robbins, president of ViacomCBS Kids and Family Entertainment.
“Magalie is a gifted journalist and producer with a long-proven ability to communicate the news of the day with compassion, empathy and precision,” said Robbins. “Kids are well aware of the issues that affect their families and the world, and the talent and experience Magalie brings will serve as the foundation for how we aid or spark important conversations for our audience.”
Laguerre-Wilkinson worked for 15 years as an associate producer and producer on CBS’ 60 Minutes, working with correspondents including Ed Bradley, Lesley Stahl, Bob Simon, Steve Kroft, Oprah Winfrey and Anderson Cooper. She was the key producer on the newsmagazine’s 2012 piece about the Kimbanguist Symphony Orchestra in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which won Emmy and Peabody awards.
She also previously worked as a correspondent for the CBS Evening News and a producer on NBC Nightly News.
Nick News, which ran for 25 years prior to creator and anchor Linda Ellerbee’s retirement, relaunched in June with a special titled Kids, Race and Unity. Laguerre-Wilkinson co-executive produced the special.
