Challah Baking

Tu'B' Shevat Seder

Classroom News
PreK/Kindergarten
PreK/Kindergarten has been enjoying lots of fun crafts lately in class! We have decorated tzedekah boxes and our own flower pots for Tu B'shevat. We enjoyed a Tu Bishvat seder for the holiday with first grade and had lots of delicious fruits. We also leraned to braid our own challah to take home and eat on Shabbat.
First Grade: This month, the 1st grade Hebrew-Saurs learned about Tu B'Shevat as we enjoyed a Seder to celebrate the trees' birthdays and utilized the symbolism of fruits and nuts with how we process events in life- from our hearts and emotions, minds and thoughts, actions and daily work. We made individual challahs under the direction of the generous Gale Hirsch. We also moved our bodies and learned Hebrew with the talented yoga teacher, Mindy Lasky.  What a great month!
Second/Third Grade : Miss Risa's class has been busy learning about Tu'bishvat, practicing their Hebrew and learning about family relationships such Jacob and Esau and how to respectfully and tactfully find resolutions when faced with conflicts. They are doing a great job and have so much to share.
4th Grade: We have had such a fun month full of activities! We've finished the Book of Exodus, made Parsha comic strips, braided and baked challah, attended a Tu B'Shvat seder,  recruited second and third graders to join Shomrei Adamah (Guardians of the Earth), and attended a shekel fair.
5th Grade:
The 6th grade is learning about the book of Isaiah and how the messages still apply to our lives today. In preparation for Tu B'Shevat they practiced the blessings over different types of fruits. They got to enjoy a Tu B'Shevat seder (Thank You Mrs. Michelle!) and learn about the fruits of the land of Israel. They also had the opportunity to braid their own challah (Thank you to Mrs. Gale Hirsh and Mrs. Eva!).

                     A BIG thank you
to the wonderful Mrs. Gale Hirsh, who made the dough for us and spent her Sunday braiding and baking challah with our students.   It was definitely a labor of love!

Our 8/9th graders Holocaust study

This month, a group of 6 students will be going to visit the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC as part their study on the topic.
Mrs. Amy Rotker who lately spent a month of training at Yad Vashem in Israel is leading the Holocaust studies at Shalom School.
