The food here is very good. I got a paneer dish and the sauce had great flavor. I was with someone who got chicken Tikka Masala and she said it was great as well.
The naan is so good and very large. I've never seen such big naan! We got garlic naan, yum!
I got a mango lasi to drink and it didn't disappoint.
Service is meh but food will bring me back.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Priscilla A.Chicago, IL8015671Jan 27, 2017
While I really enjoy Indian food, it's certainly a food I don't "crave" in the regular sense, hence I only eat it once a year, if even. But every time I do eat it, I always tell myself I should eat this way more often! Hema's might be that game changer.
My date and I were looking for a BYOB restaurant to drink some delicious beer he brought back from Colorado. He suggested Hema's so we trekked it over Wednesday night. We got there around 6:30pm and the restaurant was empty, which was perfect cos we wanted a super chill night.
We're immediately served water and they hand us our menus. My date's vegetarian, but we normally share our meals.
For starters we ordered the Veggie Samosas which came with two different types of sauces, both delicious. For our entrees we shared the Aloo Matar Paneer and the Dal Dahkni, plain rice and the Garlic Naan.
The Aloo Matar Paneer was FIYAH!!! It was so delicious, just the right amount of kick to the spice. Plus the garlic naan....such buttery, garlicy yumminess. I love regular naan as it is, but this garlic naan was awesome. The lentil dish was very flavorful, not as spicy. Our meal was filling, and we were happy we both had enough left over for leftovers the next day :)
There was a steady stream of people coming in and out of the restaurant, and they were all for take out. One other person came in to eat at the restaurant, so it was a very quiet night during our time there.
Our server was extremely friendly and was on it with our water refills. Overall, we were very pleased with our experience.
I'm not in the area too often, but now I know where to go for some awesome Indian food!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Ian C.Lafayette, IN159331434Feb 11, 2018
Came in last night and the place was cold and empty, not cold atmosphere, temperature. The staff were even wearing multiple layers, so I knew it wasn't just me. I have a couple of great spots I frequent, but thought I'd try something new. Probably a dumb move on my behalf.
Ordered the murg makhani, naan, and rice ($2.99). The murg had zero flavor outside of tomato and the portion was laughable. The rice was cold and tasted stale. The naan was flavorless, but warm.
Staff was friendly, which is what saved this. However, I will not be going back as there are many other great spots in Chicago.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Deepak J.Chicago, IL32832228Jun 14, 2017
This is the best Indian food you can get in Chicago without having to travel all the way to Devon street, or even paying the steep prices you'd get from a typical Indian spot in the city. The dishes have the characteristic full flavor profile prototypical of Indian cuisine and the portion sizes are more than adequate.
Only loses a star here because the bathroom was absolutely disgusting, it seems as though the Indian food didn't sit so well with another patron.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 31, 2018
Small, casual, unassuming place. Went there at a random afternoon hour when it was completely empty so was hesitant at first. Got the green curry with fish. Really good. Eggplant curry dish was alright; a bit bland. AWESOME garlic nann if you're a garlic fiend like me. Chunks of garlic throughout, chewier/yeastier than most naan I've had and it was amazing. Would go back to this place if in the area. Quiet but sweet server.

I am surprised by how negative the reviews are for this place! I thought all of the food we had was tasty, and the service was good. It is a little pricey, and entrees don't come with naan or rice, but this is in Lincoln Park!
We stopped here after going to zoo lights last night. We had 9 people, about half of which were vegetarian. Ethnic food was our best option, and Hemas was the best choice within walking distance to the zoo.
I'm glad we choose Hemas. The food was good. There was only one other set of diners when we arrived late in the evening, but there was not much going on in the rest of Lincoln Park. (That was so strange to see. Does the whole area just go back to Ohio/Michigan/Indiana for the holidays?)
I didn't think this was the best deal or the best Indian food I've ever had, but I was impressed by it given its location. If you are in the area, this is a great choice, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jan 10, 2015
WOW - great place for veggie lovers! Their vegetarian selection is really good.
I had a chicken dish - name totally escapes me (sorry). It was spicy and warmed me up on a super cold winter day,
Hema's is also BYOB so that's pretty AWESOME too!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Kate P.Chicago, IL14417885Jun 23, 2015
I've been here twice in the past year and the food has been splendid. Very flavorful, rich, savory and large portions. The service is just okay but it doesn't bother me because the food is fantastic! The decor is simple and nothing spectacular.
Appetizers:
-Vegetable Pakoras -- wonderful and crunchy and served with two sauces; one is spicy (green), one is sweeter (red)
-Potato Cutlets -- superb
Entrees:
-Aloo Matar Paneer -- savory rich sauce and cheese with potatoes and peas; delicious!
-Chicken Tikka Masala -- perfectly spiced
Bread:
-Garlic Naan -- a bit bland but we still ate it all!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 5, 2017
I'm gonna immediately start off this review by saying this place is SO RIDICULOUSLY SLOW. We arrived to the restaurant at 630pm because my friends and I were craving Indian. Lot of open seats - cool, so we should be in and out right? WRONG. Ordered within 10 minutes of being seated. Friends, the food did not get to us until 50 minutes later. 50! I ordered the typical tikka masala and it was tasty but man, it was good probably because I waited so freaking long. 50, people. Ok, fine, whatever. We decide to leave after we eat so we asked for our check and they took our check and they did not come back with it until 20 minutes later. We were like "yo where is this check?" And they were like "whaaat?" They FORGOT to hand us back the check after they swiped our cards. Food was also pretty expensive so definitely not worth coming back after that sort of service.
