An overwhelming majority of voters said in a new national survey that they prefer their elected official to reach across the aisle to find solutions rather than stick to working with members of their own party.
The Hill-HarrisX poll, which was released on Tuesday, found 75 percent of registered voters prefer that their elected official find a way to partner with the opposite party on legislation.
Just 25 percent of those polled said that they want their elected officials to stick to working with members of their own party.
Democrats and Republicans alike said they backed a bipartisan approach.
Sixty-nine percent of GOP respondents said that they would prefer lawmakers to work with members of the opposite party, compared to 74 percent of Democrats who said the same. Eighty-two percent of independents voiced a similar sentiment.
The latest Hill-HarrisX survey comes as lawmakers return to Capitol Hill after their August recess.
Lawmakers have a number of issues to deal with, including gun control, appropriations measures and funding for President Trump’s long-promised border wall.
Democrats are also focused on impeachment, an issue that is decidedly partisan.
HarrisX researchers surveyed 1,002 registered voters between September 7 and September 8. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
