GLOW Academy breaks ground on new campus
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The GLOW Academy in Wilmington hopes to pioneer the way for all-girl charter schools after breaking ground at its new facility Thursday
The new $14 million campus will have an 18,600 square-foot middle school building, a 19,183 square-foot high school building, an expansive media center, cafeteria, maker space, administrative offices and outdoor learning areas.
Victoria Roblero- Mendoza, who is a student at GLOW Academy, says it's not just a new building that makes for a good learning environment.
"The building isn't everything, it's what's in our mind. So whenever the building is done, it looks fine as long as we have a good building where we could learn and we could be relaxed and we could communicate with our teachers," explained Roblero- Mendoza
Destiny Gieschen added that GLOW has been a great experience for her the first day she walked through the door.
"I didn't really want to come. I didn't know anybody. I just didn't want to come, then the very first day I came, I just felt so welcome to be with so many girls to get to know them, to get to build a community with them, to build a sisterhood with them," said Gieschen.
The new building is scheduled to be open for the 2019- 2020 school year.
