Il mio papà sta andando incontro alla tetraplegia

Caro lettore, mi chiamo Ilaria e questa campagna è dedicata al mio papà, Francesco Calutas (68 anni). Papà soffre di stenosi spinale ormai da tanti anni e grazie a 12 interventi chirurgici importanti e ad una forza vitale colossale, ha potuto condurre una vita dignitosa, seppur piena di sofferenza, sconfiggendo anche un cancro alla prostata. Da più di un anno a questa parte papà ha iniziato ad accusare dolori fortissimi dal collo in giù, che l’hanno portato a perdere sempre più mobilità, lasciandolo allettato per mesi. In seguito a diversi esami condotti nel settembre 2022, è risultato uno spostamento della protesi cervicale inserita chirurgicamente nel 2003 (questa per rallentare il processo di stenosi), colpevole degli ultimi mesi di sofferenza. Esami che sono stati recentemente ripetuti e che hanno riportato un ulteriore peggioramento della situazione.

In Italia abbiamo parlato con svariati neurochirurghi. La diagnosi è chiara. Si sta correndo in fretta verso la tetraplegia. Sfortunatamente, nessuno dei neurochirurghi a cui ci siamo rivolti è disposto ad intervenire, visto l’alto rischio dell’operazione.

Ci siamo rivolti all’estero, come spesso succede in situazioni come la nostra, e abbiamo trovato un riscontro positivo in Germania con il Prof. Dr. med. Marcus Richter. Oltre ad avere un’ottima reputazione a livello internazionale e l’esperienza necessaria, il Dr. Richter ha una struttura alle spalle che ci fa ben sperare. Quello che ci fa anche ben sperare è la sua convinzione che l’intervento possa avere successo, nonostante l’alto rischio. Siamo nelle sue mani. E nelle vostre. L’intervento ha un costo preventivato di 47.000 euro, costo che include 3 settimane di degenza. Il post operatorio rimane un interrogativo, così come eventuali spese aggiuntive in cui si potrebbe facilmente incorrere vista la complessità del caso.

Sto scrivendo tutto questo meccanicamente. Posso lasciare alla vostra immaginazione come una figlia di 31 anni possa sentirsi all’idea di perdere un padre. A vederlo soffrire nella completa impotenza, mia e sua. E di tutti noi che lo amiamo.

Non so cos’altro fare. Ma non sono pronta a perderlo. E lui certamente non è pronto ad andarsene.

Dear reader, my name is Ilaria, and this campaign is dedicated to my dad, Francesco Calutas (68 years old). Dad has been suffering from spinal stenosis for many years now, and thanks to 12 major surgeries and a colossal life force, he has been able to lead a dignified life, albeit full of suffering, and a won case against prostate cancer. For more than a year now, dad has begun to experience severe pain from the neck down, which has led him to lose more and more mobility, leaving him bedridden for months. Following several exams conducted in September 2022, it was found a displacement of the cervical prosthesis surgically inserted in 2003 (this aimed at slowing down the stenosis process), such displacement being the culprit of the last few months of suffering. These exams have been recently repeated, and they show a substantial worsening of the situation.

In Italy, we spoke to various neurosurgeons. The diagnosis is clear. We are rushing towards tetraplegia. Unfortunately, none of the neurosurgeons we contacted are willing to intervene, given the high risk of the operation.

We turned abroad, as it often happens in situations like ours, and we found positive feedback in Germany with Prof. Dr. med. Marcus Richter. In addition to having an excellent international reputation and the necessary experience, Dr. Richter has a structure behind him that gives us hope. What also gives us hope is his belief that the operation can be successful, despite the high risk. We are in his hands. And in yours. The surgery has an estimated cost of 47,000 euros, a cost that includes 3 weeks of hospitalisation. The post-op period remains a question mark, as well as any additional expenses that could easily be incurred, given the complexity of the case.

I am writing all of this mechanically. I can let you imagine how a 31-year-old daughter might feel about losing a father. To see him constantly suffer in complete helplessness, mine and his. And of all those who love him.

I don't know what else to do. But I'm not ready to lose him. And he certainly isn't ready to leave us.
