Communities Organizing for Racial Equity

Looking Back.  Healing Forward.

We are a community of coaches, facilitators, and advocates with more than two decades of experience empowering and equipping churches and Christian organizations for the work of antiracism.

"I am deeply encouraged by the number of people who tell me that their experience at a CORE workshop has been life-changing. I believe that the message we offer at CORE delivers more hope for healing our divides than is available anywhere else."

-- Victoria Gibbs, Co-founder, trainer, & lead coach

Who We Are

Communities Organizing for Racial Equity (formerly CORR) has been providing Christ-centered anti-racism training for organizations and churches in the West Michigan community and beyond for over 20 years.

We seek to pursue our God-sized vision of individuals, churches, and institutions discipled through a robust theology of justice, equipped for life-long biblical antiracism and pursuing shalom together as the beloved community.

Our Logo

The CORE logo was designed by Luis Sanchez, a latino designer and illustrator from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Luis’s work was inspired by the Sankofa bird, a symbol derived from the Akan people of West Africa which is used as a powerful image in CORE’s work. Sankofa teaches us that we must go back to our roots in order to move forward.

Visually and symbolically, “Sankofa” is expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth. In Luis’s artistic take on the Sankofa, the bird is stylized in a way that visually denotes forward and upward momentum. The bright mix of colors, as well as the space in between them, act as a sort of puzzle where the pieces fit together reminding us that our differences are not an obstacle to overcome, but the building blocks of something intrinsically beautiful and deeply meaningful: true community.

“CORE’s work is unique in the racial equity space because of its foundation. It seeks to organize and build community through a biblical worldview, recognizing the church’s role in history and believing in God’s power to transform the human heart.”

— Juan Fernandez, CORE community member
