Despite the momentum of AI in healthcare, many provider organizations are unsure of how to proceed and capture true ROI from their efforts. In this article for Physicians Practice, the Fathom team debunks some common AI misconceptions and shares actionable steps on the best way to approach AI adoption for your practice, including: [1] Assessing organizational readiness: Lay out workflows, requirements, data availability, and other factors that shape potential AI applications. [2] Identifying inefficiencies in your operations: Comprehensively review pain points to isolate priorities for AI. Many organizations find that administrative workflows such as coding offer significant opportunities to save costs, improve results, and free up resources. [3] Setting measurable goals: Orient your team around what success looks like, thus helping to ensure ROI from the project. For example, autonomous coding should fully automate 90%+ of encounters upon go-live. Such goals provide clear criteria for evaluating impact. [4] Researching AI vendors: Among other criteria, evaluate track record, integration approaches, and scalability to ensure a long-term partnership that grows as you do. [5] Trialing an AI solution and vendor: Test vendor claims for yourself by running a trial first. Any strong vendor should agree to proving performance for a client to validate results and ROI. Co-Founder and CEO at Fathom -- Autonomous medical coding

I'm thrilled to welcome Kunal Nath to Fathom, who recently joined our team as a Strategic Client Advisor. Kunal comes to Fathom after nearly 15 years at Epic (!!!). Throughout his time at Epic, he led integrations for major health systems transitioning to the EHR, including HL7 experience. By the end of his tenure there, he was overseeing about 50 integration engineers and 8 team leads on their health system projects. Kunal holds a BS in Computer Science and Engineering from The Ohio State University. At Fathom, Kunal brings his deep experience to partner with some of our health system clients on implementations and ongoing expansions. I've been impressed with his impact already and am very excited about his contributions to come. FUN FACT: Despite his technical prowess, he still clinched the title of "Best Actor" in his high school's Inter-Class Dramatics Competition.

The Health Management Academy's CFO Forum brought together health system financial executives last month to discuss the most pressing challenges, successes, and opportunities for AI partnerships. One takeaway stood out among the many valuable discussions: The importance of proving vendor performance before making investments in AI. For AI, CFOs increasingly rely on performance and pilot metrics to guide their decisions, highlighting the need to validate AI technologies thoroughly. For example, THMA shared the case of one health system that ran 12 pilots with AI vendors, ultimately finding that only 2 of the vendors produced results consistent with their marketing claims. At Fathom, we agree with this emphasis on demonstrating quality and proving ROI. That's why our client organizations first validate results for themselves by comparing their teams' coding to our system's in a blind study prior to go-live. Shrewd CFOs and other leaders should expect strong vendors to agree to this kind of validation approach. Thank you to THMA for recapping this insightful discussion!
