College student kicked out of ‘Christianity’ class for saying there are only two genders

A college student was kicked out of his Christianity class at Indiana University of Pennsylvania after he told his professor that biologists agree there are only two genders.

The student, Lake Ingle, said his professor, Dr. Allison Downie, kicked him out of the classroom and then attempted to have him permanently banned, all because he refused to apologize for his comments about biology and the gender wage gap.

During the Feb. 28 class, titled “Special Topics In Christianity: Self, Sin, And Salvation,” Downie showed a Ted Talk by Paula Stone Williams, who is a transgender woman.

Ingle said that after the class watched the Ted Talk, Downie asked female students to comment on “the reality of white male privilege,” “systemic male sexism,” and “mansplaining,” adding that male students were to remain silent until the female students were done speaking.

The IUP student said that he waited for female students to comment, but no one spoke up. That’s when Ingle decided to give the professor his rebuttal, in which he disputed the gender wage gap, and pointed out the official view of biologists: there are only two genders.

Downie responded by kicking Ingle out of class, and demanding a written apology for his “behavior which has significantly damaged the learning environment.”

The professor accused Ingle of ‘disrespectful objection,’ ‘angry outbursts,’ and a myriad of other offenses.

The professor then laid out her disciplinary terms, saying that Ingle would be allowed to return to class on March 8, on the condition that he “begin class with an apology to the class for his behavior and then listen in silence as the professor and/or any student who wishes to speak shares how he or she felt during [Ingle’s] disrespectful and disruptive outbursts.”

After Ingle refused to agree to Downie’s terms, the professor reported him to the university’s Academic Integrity Board for permanent barring.

“You are barred from attending this class in accordance with the Classroom Disruption policy,” wrote IUP Provost Timothy Moerland in a March 2 letter to Ingle. Moerland went on to state that Ingle was “not allowed to return to class until the pending academic integrity charges against [Ingle] are fully adjudicated,” and that Ingle was “restricted from any contact” with Downie as well as his classmates.

“It is my firmest belief that every human being has the freedom and right to identify, dress, and represent oneself as they see fit,” Ingle said. “I think this is all an attempt to silence my views personally, because they contradict the ones she [Downie] pushes in class so evidently.”

Ingle, who is a senior at IUP, needs to complete Downie’s course in order to graduate in May.

On March 9, Downie and Ingle had a hearing before the university’s Academic Integrity Board, in which Ingle disputed Downie’s attempt for a permanent suspension. The Academic Integrity Board’s ruling is currently set for March 19.
