Mailtrack lets you track if someone opened an email you’ve sent them. What is Mailtrack?
But what exactly is email open tracking and how does it work?
What is email open tracking?
Email open tracking is the process by which you can monitor if someone opened an email. It is particularly useful if you need to follow-up with someone about a job application, for example, or chase up a sales lead.
How does email open tracking work?
In the case of Mailtrack, we use pixel-based tracking.
When you send an email, Mailtrack automatically adds a tracking pixel (a really small image) to that email. Then, when it is opened the tracking pixel is downloaded and sends a call to our servers to let us know the mail has been opened.
Tracking email opens with Google Analytics also works using tracking pixels but the tracking process is a lot more complicated and time-consuming. If you’re looking for ease and simplicity you're better off using a dedicated email tracking solution like Mailtrack.
Another way to track email opens is by using Gmail read receipts. This is how Outlook tracks email opens but it’s a lot less reliable than pixel-based tracking. Read receipts rely on the recipient accepting the email return receipt, which is not always guaranteed.
Tracking email opens in Gmail
If you’d like to track email opens in Gmail then obviously we’d recommend Mailtrack 🙂.
Once you’ve installed Mailtrack on your browser, we’ll let you know when someone opened an email by adding 2 green check marks next to that email in your sent mail folder.
How to track email opens with Outlook
If you’ve decided against using Outlook’s read receipt feature and want a more reliable way to track email opens, then Mailtrack can help.
While Mailtrack is a Gmail add-on, you can also use it to track emails for other email services such as Outlook providing you reroute them through Gmail. Learn how to use Mailtrack with an Outlook email address here.
